My great grandmother was the cousin to Bartholdi’s mother. We have known that the face of the Statue of Liberty was hers. Although the Sculptor was from France, the family comes from Italy. Northern Italy, alto aldige, in the Dolomites. My grandparents are from the same town as the Bartholdi’s, and the Bartholdi’s are our cousins.

My grandparents moved to mine coal in Wyoming in 1908, as did the Bartholdi cousins.

The two Bartholdi granddaughters were on one of the morning talk show news-casts years ago to talk about their great grandfather and the Statue of Liberty. Those girls are from the same small town as I , in Wyoming. They are my brother and sister’s age, about 10 years older than me.

My eldest brother has the same forehead and nose as the statue. We all think that she looks like him or vice versa. I guess we think she’s kind of masculine looking.

My sister and I both have that wide forehead too, just not the rest of the face!
