Actually they do exist and have for a long time. Experts on insects species, variety, and genetic characteristics, as well as life cycles and interaction with other species and humans.... are generally called entomologists. And, like any other profession, there is a range of expertise among the experts. Note - "expert" does NOT mean omniscient nor "ultimate and infallible" source of information.

BigGuy, do you have any specific recommendations? I have mosquitos from last year's winter... still in my freezer.

Depending on the state in which you live, there should be a local (in your county) extension agent for the state's Department of Natural Resources. The agent should be able to direct you to the state's entomologist who identifies pests to monitor if there is any sudden appearance / introduction of a foreign bug / invasive species that could be destructive to local plants, livestock, and humans.

That is the starting process I would follow if I found an unusual insect had started appearing despite never before having been seen in my area, and lacking any online reports of it by authorities in your area who had identified it.

If that hit a dead end, then I would seek an entomologist from the University of Maryland (my state of residence) since I know they have experts in agriculture and wildlife. Perhaps your state has equivalent studies / expertise at the state university.

"Actually they do exist and have for a long time"

My response would be similar to how I responded to Reinette above or below.

My mistake. I phrased it wrong. I didn't mean there are no good/honest/correct experts out there. There are. Some. At least 3% to 7% of them.

Then again, there are some good Doctors out there. As in 3-5%? I know them, now, personally. Huge help in my quest for The Damn Truth And Nothing But The Objective Truth the past 40 years. Unfortunately, these honest, objective Doctors are in the vast minority.
